• Don't forget this evening at the Community Center a dmission is free to JVIA members (while supplies last), and cheap to everyone else. Get hamburger or hot dogs hot off the grill plus all the good fixin's.
Doors open at 5:30, dinner is at 6:00.
• Stay after dinner for a special presentation by the Partnership for Johnson Valley. We are all concerned about the planned expansion of the 29 Palms Marine Base, which among other areas, would cut the heart out of the Open Riding Area. OHV people, campers, rockhounds, desert lovers: you could never go there again. Businesses who serve the visitors and tourists: they would not be coming any more. Johnson Valley residents and property owners: look forward to three battalions of our fighting men, in a minimum of 48 hours of live fire air-ground combat, right in your front yard.
The program will start at about 6:45, and there will be time for some questions afterward.

• The BLM meeting at Lucerne Valley last Monday was well attended. This one was for citizens concerned about the installation of wind turbines in the Fry Mtns. in the Johnson Valley Open Riding Area. The application is from a Florida company, which, by the way, has no wind farms in Florida. The reports are that everyone who had a comment was against it. No surprise there. As representatives from the Alliance for Responsible Energy Policy pointed out:

What we are being asked to accept is far beyond what can be accepted by anyone who wants to keep our public lands PUBLIC, intact, and usable for future generations.

We are asked to give up our public lands for next to nothing, and accept ruined views and property values.

We are asked to subsidize their high profit business with our tax dollars – which could better be used for distributed energy generation.

We are asked to accept more power lines through our rural communities, which will undoubtedly require the use of eminent domain and people being forced out of their homes.

We are asked to pay for the high costs of wind energy generation through higher electricity bills.
Hope the BLM is listening. The answer is NO.

• On the light side now. After the pinochle game last Tuesday the Card Club headed over to the Western Coffee Pot in Flamingo Heights for their special Tuesday Taco Dinner. Delicious. Great homemade hot salsa!

• Then the Wednesday morning Hobby Club had a special session under the trees on the patio. Cheryl Lee gave us an intro to decorating gourds, bringing a supply of materials to start us off. No two gourds look the same and the variety in the decoration was amazing. Lots of fun!

• July Milestones: Happy Birthday to Jim Hanley, Sharon Helfand, Bobbie Jones, Marilyn Kuder, Linda Ramey, Pat Stokes, Bill Wright and Mike Wright.
Happy Anniversary to Helene & Vic DiAco, 55th; Sherrill & John Edmundson; jamie & Ron Scharns, 8th.
